Just a quick reminder about salt treatment in the winter weather.

Although salt is important for ice removal, too much can be corrosive to pavement and vehicles, harmful to pets, and carried through runoff into the stormwater system and local water bodies.

Here are a few tips for responsible salt application:

  • Check the packaging materials for the ideal spreading rate. Different de-icing chemicals may have different application rates. Don’t overapply!
  • Store salt containers indoors in a dry location when not in use.
  • Apply salt before a storm if possible, or shovel fresh snow from driveways/sidewalks before salting. Dumping salt on fresh snow is less efficient and will be washed away as it melts.
  • Standard sodium chloride “rock salt” is only effective at temperatures above 15°. In colder weather, other chemicals such as magnesium chloride or calcium chloride are needed to melt snow/ice. Potassium chloride is a more environmentally friendly alternative to rock salt, but is only effective above 25°.
  • Consider non-chemical alternatives like sand or kitty litter to improve your vehicle traction without melting ice.
  • And of course, if you can afford to wait, let the sun melt it!
